Tenerife is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the World. Its year round warm temperature and spectacular volcanic scenery as well as beaches, water sports and night-life ensure its constant popularity. Tenerife is dominated by the large, dormant volcano of Mount Teide and the island rises steeply from all directions up to the snowy tip of Mount Teide. Surrounding the peak is the amazing volcanic landscape that is now protected in the Parque Nacional del Teide.

Volcanoes of Teide Park

Teide National Park is a national park surrounding Mount Teide in the centre of Tenerife Mount Teide is a volcano within a volcano. Millions of years ago a volcano exploded and left behind a 16km-wide crater and on its northern edge smaller volcano - Mount Teide. The whole area is now a weird volcanic landscape filled with lava rocks, lava streams and ash beds. As well as some wonderful rock formations the Teide National Park is home to the wonderful tall Echium wildprettii also known as Teide viper's bugloss. These amazing plants have 2m tall reddish spikes in early summer. May/June is the best time of the year to see many of Teide's plants in flower.

Lovely views of Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island's capital and its deep natural harbour has historically led to a period of wealth and many fine historic buildings can be seen in the city. Even today the harbour is one of the busiest in Spain and is also an important harbour for the cruise ships which visit Tenerife from around the world. Santa Cruz's main beach is 'Las Teresitas' which is a fine golden beach courtesy of millions of tonnes of sand from the Sahara desert. With palm trees and a back-drop of the Anaga Mountains it is the most beautiful beach on Tenerife. In the town itself head for Plaza de Espana near the harbour. Between here and Plaza de Candelaria is an excellent shopping area. Calle de Castillo is the main shopping street. If you are looking for some lively nightlife then head down to Avenida Anaga on the waterfront.

Family fun at Loro Parque

Loro Parque is a large animal park on the north coast of of Tenerife not far from Puerto de la Cruz. Loro Parque is a great destination for a family day out. It is one of the best and most popular attractions on Tenerife. The park has a zoo which includes chimpanzees, gorillas and tigers including a rare male white tiger. There is also an aquarium and a penguin world complete with snow and ice to replicate conditions in the Antartic. Recently added is a Katanda Treetops attraction where you walk through jungle walkways and across hanging bridges surrounded by hundreds of birds of many species including cockatoos, kookaburras and emus. The highlight for many are the various shows that are put on by the park. There is an Orca show which was developed with Sea World in the USA. The four Orcas live in pools up to 120 metres long and their shows are always a huge attraction

Masca

Masca is a village set in the Teno Mountains.  Its location is stunning and because it is quite difficult to get to on a road full of tight hairpin bends it has been relatively undiscovered until recent years. Indeed there wasn't a road at all before 1991 and led to Masca being known as the 'forgotten village'. Masca is the most beautiful village on Tenerife and its houses appear to cling onto the edge of the rocky mountainside on which it is built. As well as the deep ravines and dramatic views the surrounding vegetation is lush and adds to the beauty of the site. In the centre of the village there is a bar and a tiny church. The church is so small there is only room inside for eight people!
